Facade2015 “Computational Optimisation”Our next conference takes place on Nov. 27th, 2015 in Detmold. It will focus on the potential of Computational tools in Design- and Fabrication processes, but also within the Operation of Building envelopes.Digital Tools // Physical SystemsIt is a common challenge of recent architectural projects, to realize complex geometries in a simple, cost efficient way. As an inversion of this challenge the students were asked to design a very simple module. The production of the element should be based on 2D fabrication methods, but at the same time offer the assembly into a complex spatial system.TU Delft PHD’s Go/NoGo sessionRelated to the TU Delft system PhD´s have to take a Go/NoGo session after one year of research to evaluate there development and future research layout. This time the session was under the supervision of Dr. Michela Turin / TU Delft and Prof Dr. Oliver Tessmann / TU Darmstadt as peers and hosted by prof Dr. Henk Visscher as head of the graduate school of the faculty.EFNmobile – Detmold “Computational Optimisation”In November 2015, the next EFN mobile workshop will be held. It takes place as part of this year's facade week in Detmold, next to our EFN meetings and the conference "Computational Optimisation". The workshop will be based on the theme of the conference. As in the workshops before, our goal is to develop innovative façade constructions with international student teams of our European Façade Network.SunSysSUNSYS is a five meters long and two meters high wall, which was implemented as an experimental construction in late October on the campus Emilie in Detmold. It was developed by the application of digital design and manufacturing methods. Planar elements are assembled in a plug-in system and generate a freeform geometry. Variations in the dimension of the individual elements enable different degrees of wall-openings.BiennaleThe Biennale 2014 was the 14th International Architecture Exhibition, titled Fundamentals. It was directed by Rem Koolhaas and organized by la Biennale di Venezia. We had the chance to visit the exhibition within the opening time from June 7 until November 23, 2014, in the Giardini and the Arsenale.ThinkingSkins Function MockupsAs part of the research we are analysing dependencies between different adaptive functions of the facade. We are developing a series of prototypes that represent individual functions of the facade. In the course of the study, the models should be combined and negotiate with each other in different constellations.Arduino Clip MountWe recently developed this small prototype as a reversible connection for Arduino UNO R3 Microcontrollers. The Idea of a clip connection was derived from nowadays action camera mounts. It is supposed to attach the controllers temporary to our experimental MockUps. First prototypes are ordered by now from a 3d-printing service. 'Workshop UFLIn February 2015 we held a “ThinkingSkins” Workshop at the University of Florida in Gainesville (FL). The task was to develop multifunctional concepts for adaptive building envelopes. In interdisciplinary teams consisting of architecture and civil engineering students we developed forward-looking ideas for building envelope constructions that were also presented on posters as workshopresult.Workshop – adaptive EnvelopesRelated to the conference Facade2014 in Lucerne, a one-week workshop was held together with students from the universities of the European Façade Network (EFN), icluding TU Delft (NL), University Ost-Westfalen-Lippe in Detmold (D), Universidad del Pais Vasco (E) and the University of Bath (UK). The challenge was to design and realize a working prototype of an adaptive façade.'ThinkingSkins – efnMOBIL Workshop in DelftFrom June 15th to 17th 2015 we are holding a workshop about multifunctional adaptive façades. It will take place as part of the EFN-mobile workshop series at the Technical University in Delft and is based on the research of “ThinkingSkins” by Jens Böke.ThinkingSkins describes the exploration of adaptive building envelopes on the basis of negotiated information. This includes the conceptual analysis of current technical developments towards a total construction system. Inside the workshop we are going to prototype façade responses on dynamically changing environmental conditions. In a first step, individual façade functions will be studied which should then become integrated into a holistic system. The result of the workshop will be prototypes of multifunctional adaptive façades.efnMOBIL WorkshopTU DelftJune 15th – 17th 2015 Conference on Building EnvelopesWe refer to Unobtainium as a material or technology which is perfectly suited for a particular application, except that it does not exist yet or is extremely costly or difficult to obtain. Unobtainium is the answer to many of our technological and architectural challenges. What type of new materials will allow us to embed new functionalities in building envelopes? Which technologies will lead to more efficient and durable construction details? What concepts or systems will lead to energy savings and higher comfort? During the ninth edition of the annual conference, international speakers from the disciplines of project development, material technology, façade design, and architecture will share their experience and visions of the future building envelope.Façade2014At the international conference "Façade2014" internationally renowned engineers and architects will introduce newest trends, developments and technologies related to the building envelope. This year's event, themed “Adaptive Building Envelopes” is dedicated to a still relatively new technology.
